If there’s one service the mountain generates more than anywhere else in the county, it’s recovery. The I-40 grade sheds vehicles down its embankments — a slide on ice, a spin on a wet curve, a driver who lost it on the descent. And the plateau roads — State Routes 62, 84, and 164, and the gravel lanes spidering off them — put drivers in ditches and off soft shoulders that valley roads never would, especially once the cold sets in. Up here, “stuck” is the normal call, not the unusual one.

That’s a winch-and-cable job, and often a cold, awkward one on a steep or icy grade where the recovery truck itself has to be placed carefully so it doesn’t become the second stuck vehicle. When you call, tell the dispatcher how the vehicle is positioned — nose-down the embankment, off the uphill or downhill shoulder, sideways on a curve — and whether there’s ice or snow involved. A winch-out on a dry summer shoulder and one on an iced descent in January need different setups, and knowing which we’re walking into lets us bring the right rig and get you out on the first try instead of the second.
