Where the Grade Finds the Weak Rigs

Monterey mountain is a test a lot of motorhomes and tow rigs don’t expect. The long I-40 pull up to Exits 300 and 301 overheats tired engines and transmissions, and the descent on the far side is where trailer brakes and tow-vehicle brakes get pushed past what they can handle. Plenty of RVs make it up the grade fine only to break down at the top, or limp off the interstate onto US-70 looking for somewhere to stop. When that happens, the rig can’t just go on whatever truck is nearest — the axle weights and hitch geometry demand equipment built for the size.

We carry it: trailer-rated dollies, proper tie-down gear, and the tow rating to move a loaded Class A, a fifth-wheel, or a travel trailer off the mountain safely. Getting a big rig off a grade at elevation is exactly the kind of job where the right equipment isn’t optional, and it’s what we bring up the mountain.

Off the Interstate or at the Campground

Monterey’s plateau draws outdoor travelers — it’s a scenic, cool-climate stop — so camper calls here come both from the interstate and from the campgrounds and sites around town. There’s the roadside version: a rig overheated or broken down on the I-40 grade, needing to come off a high-speed shoulder safely. And there’s the site version: a trailer that’s dropped a wheel off a pad or won’t pull back out. Both need the same trailer-rated approach.
