The grade is what makes Monterey’s accidents their own kind of call. The I-40 climb and descent over the mountain sees speed, weather, and heavy truck traffic all at once, and a wreck on that stretch — especially in ice or fog at elevation — can involve multiple vehicles and block lanes on a road with nowhere easy to pull off. On US-70 through town it’s more often intersection collisions. Either way, the first job is getting the disabled vehicle out of the travel lanes before it causes a second impact, and doing it without adding damage to a car that’s already been hit.
